You will need a valid driver’s license. If you are from Northern Ireland, you may obtain an Alberta driver’s license from any registry office in Calgary if you bring the following items:
  • your valid Irish driver’s license
  • your passport
  • your proof of residency in Alberta (something with your street address, such as a utility bill)
If you are from Southern Ireland, you must complete both a written and an actual driving test. This can be arranged through any registry office in Calgary.

You can find more information at the Alberta Registries website.

What else do I need to own and drive a vehicle in Calgary?

Vehicles must be registered with the Alberta government, which can be done through any registry office in Calgary. This is approximately $90 CDN per vehicle.

The vehicle must also be insured, and we can help you find an insurance agent. Note: rates will vary depending on your age and the type of vehicle
you’re renting.
